A little bit of background…
Inflammation can be thought of as the body’s way of fighting against things that harm it. Remember the last time you had an infected cut? It got all nasty and inflamed, while the body was ramping up the building of antibodies and proteins. Chronic inflammation occurs when this response happens for a long time, typically internally. You can have it for a whole bunch of reasons. If you think you may have chronic inflammation, but aren’t sure/don’t know why, see your doctor.
We’re talking about simple, healthy ways to reduce chronic inflammation.
Again, if you think you may have chronic inflammation, talk to your doctor. Sometimes it can be subtle & have larger underlying reasons. But common symptoms include fatigue, fever, mouth sores, rashes, abdominal, and chest pain.
Studies have linked chronic inflammation with several diseases such as cancer, heart disease, rheumatoid arthritis, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and more. The catch is though, you don’t necessarily have to live with it. Or at least, you can still try and make the situation better than what it currently is…
The only way great accomplishments ever came to fruition is by trying. Unless you’re batman. I’m sure he never had to deal with any of this crap…
There are simple and healthy ways to reduce inflammation, and you can actually start doing them all, today.
We as humans tend to neglect our overall health. Most of these tips will not just reduce inflammation, but also help you live a healthier lifestyle all around.
1. Avoid Sugars and Other Inflammatory Foods
Sugar is enemy number one.
A few other foods should be consumed in moderation as well:
- Again, avoid sugar like it is the plague.
- Avoid refined carbohydrates. Eat natural carbohydrates like 100% whole wheat, beans, and brown rice.
- Avoid fried foods such as fried chicken, french fries, etc.
- Limit the amount of red & processed meats you eat.
If you haven’t tried cutting out sugar yet, I would try that first and foremost. Sugar is in just about everything processed. Try only consuming sugars that come from whole foods, such as fruits and vegetables. It is a serious challenge if you’ve never done this before. But it can also be eye-opening to find out how bad our diets really can be.
2. Anti-Inflammatory Foods & Spices to Add to Your Diet
- Anything with Omega-3 Fatty Acids: salmon, walnuts, chia seed, flaxseed, tofu. There are many more foods high in omega-3’s! Those are just some of the highest.
- Turmeric contains a compound curcumin
- More: Ginger, Garlic, Cinnamon, Cayenne, Black pepper
Bonus: when turmeric and black pepper are combined they work together to be more effective!
3. Supplements & Vitamins
- Fish Oil (Omega-3 supplement)
- Curcumin: this is the compound found in turmeric, which may also be taken as a supplement.
- CBD: not only does CBD help with the pain of inflammation, but there is also emerging evidence that CBD could help reduce inflammation.
4. Avoid Chronic Stress
As you may already know by now, stress has its way of wreaking havoc on just about every single aspect of your life.
Chronic inflammation is not immune to the catastrophe that chronic stress plays on the body.
Have you been feeling overwhelmingly stressed? It’s important to have an honest evaluation of your stress levels. Start taking that next step and get some help in handling the stress. You are not alone!
5. Reduce inflammation naturally with exercise
You didn’t think I would leave this one out, would you?
It doesn’t matter how fit or not you are. Just get that blood moving! And, no, I’m not saying you have to turn into a weight lifting, gym rat, machine.
I’m saying go for a 20-minute walk a few days a week if you don’t already. Then start working your way up to the CDC recommended 150 minutes of weekly moderate exercise OR, 75 minutes of vigorous exercise.
